Your first BBW date: confidence, boundaries and staying safe
How to plan a first date that feels comfortable, say what you want, and keep yourself safe, whichever side of the table you're on.
A first date after chatting online can feel like a big step. This guide is for plus-size daters and the people who want to date them. It's practical advice, not a set of rules: take what fits you and leave the rest. Published by the BBW Temptation team, 7 November 2026.
Start from confidence, not apology
You don't owe anyone your weight, your measurements or an explanation of your body. Recent photos that look like you, clothes you feel good in and a smile you mean do the work. Showing up as yourself means the person you meet is meeting the real you, and that's the whole point.
If you're an admirer, the same goes the other way: be interested in the person, not a body type. Compliments land best when they're about something they chose, like their style, their laugh or what they told you about their week.
Pick a place that works for both of you
For a first meeting, choose somewhere public, busy enough to feel easy and quiet enough to talk. Think about comfort as well as atmosphere, without making assumptions about the other person:
- Seating that suits everyone, such as chairs without fixed arms or booths with room to move.
- A short walk from parking or public transport, with step-free access if either of you needs it.
- A plan with an easy end point, like coffee, a gallery or a walk, so nobody feels stuck.
The simplest way to get this right is to ask. Something like "I'd like us both to be comfortable. Any places you love, or ones you'd rather avoid?" is considerate, not awkward.
Say what you're looking for, and listen
Before you meet, it helps to be clear about whether you're after something casual, something lasting or you're not sure yet. You might say: "I'm open to seeing where things go, and I'd like to take it slowly." These are example phrases, not quotes from members.
Boundaries are part of a good date, not a mood-killer. You can change your mind at any point, and so can they. Consent means a clear, freely given yes, every time. If someone pushes after you've said no, or makes you feel you owe them something, that tells you what you need to know.
Make a simple safety plan
- Keep chatting on the site until you're ready, rather than handing over your number, surname or workplace early.
- Take a screenshot of their profile and your messages before you meet, so you can report them later if you need to.
- Get there and back on your own, and tell a friend where you'll be and when you expect to be home.
- Agree a check-in message with that friend, and an easy way to leave if things don't feel right.
A verification badge shows that someone passed a check, not how they will behave. No site can promise that everyone is who they say they are, so your instincts still count. Read more on how we help keep you safe.
Red flags worth taking seriously
- They ask for money, gifts or financial details, however good the story sounds. Never send money to someone you haven't met.
- They keep avoiding a video call or keep cancelling plans to meet.
- They push to move the conversation off the site quickly.
- They declare strong feelings very fast, or make rude comments about your body or anyone else's.
- They pressure you to meet sooner than you want, or to send intimate photos.
If you see these signs, you can stop replying, block and report them. You don't need to explain yourself.
After the date
Let your friend know you're home. Then give yourself a moment to think about how you felt, not just how it went. If you'd like to see them again, say so simply. If you wouldn't, a short, kind message is enough: "Thanks for today. I didn't feel a spark, but I wish you well." And if they don't take no for an answer, you can block and report them.
